Memoryhook - My heart

Nagoya's newly-formed bedroom pop duo Memoryhook is
led by Takuma Inoue, who played bass guitar at
Elen Never Sleeps' live back in 2013.

On "My heart", the standout track from their 1st original song collection
(except M-2) "I Whisper It", Maya's mesmerizing vocal floats on
the stunning bassline and shimmering guitar chords.

Elen Never Sleeps - Flowers For Hesse (LP)

It's been almost 4 years since Elen Never Sleeps announced a plan
to release his debut full-length album but finally, it's here.

Kaji has been making music under the moniker of Elen Never Sleeps for more than 10 years.
It once was a post-rock band and then, after losing hearing in one ear, he decided to go solo.

Elen Never Sleeps' music is definitely not what you expect from a Japanese act.
His well constructed composition is often described as blissful dream-pop or romantic-tinged chamber pop.

To make “Flowers For Hesse”, a collection of delicately woven vocal-centric art pop songs,
Kaji recorded almost everything by using his voice and electric guitars.
Ambient pads, something flute-ish, strings ensemble, icy synth and even steelpan...
all of these sounds on the album were actually created by guitars with effects pedals.

Kaji says,
“I’m so frustrated with the fact that the western music industry basically expects Japanese music to be bizarre, eccentric and orientalized. Removing their bias is one of the main goals of this project.“

“Elen Never Sleeps' first full-length has a casual polish that's equal parts romantic sensibility and earnest wonder. - Luke Carrell, International Tapes/AdHoc”

"Artistic and well played - Jeff Bratton, CASCINE”

Elen Never Sleeps - Paradise Lost

Elen Never Sleeps, the solo bedroom pop project of Kaji, a resident of
Meguro City, is set to release his first full-length album on June 29th.

"Paradise Lost" is the 1st single off the album "Flowers For Hesse" and its
gentle daytime-indie-house touch perfectly suits these early summer days.

Sauna Cool Mini

Shota Kaneko, widely known as Teen Runnings, is now
the owner of an octopus balls cafe.
Sauna Cool Mini is located in Shin-Nagata, Kobe city where
Kaneko is currently based in.
The name "Sauna Cool" was taken from the record label he runs
and its interior decoration heavily reflects his marvelous taste in visual art.
Even the shop flyer and menu (which he designed apparently)
are appealing in a distinct manner.
I'd call the mood "summer-tinged minimalism".
The cafe has two signature dishes:
octopus balls (Takoyaki), Kobe's local specialty and
poutine (known as a classic French-Canadian dish).
He offers everything at affordable prices, really.

This is quite something, nothing like this had ever existed before.
Moreover, he is thinking about adding a new function to the cafe
in the near future.
That is something like "a small DIY venue dedicated to provide the hub
of the local youth culture"
where locals play some unplugged live shows at.

But having said that, it doesn't mean Teen Runnings is in a state of hiatus.
Teen Runnings is now in the form of his solo project
and doing Karaoke-style shows.

NOTE: Irregular holidays and temporarily closed frequently.
I recommend that you check the current status on twitter
when you're actually planning to visit.
The account tweets mostly in Japanese but Kaneko speaks English as well,
so do not hesitate to pitch a reply or DM to him in English.

MUNYA - Des Bisous Partout

Josianne Boivin, the montreal based singer/songwriter has been releasing
her psychedelic-bedroompop jams under the moniker of MUNYA since 2017.
Des Bisous Partout ("kisses everywhere"), the latest single sung in French, is
clearly fated to be her breakthrough song. Wrapped in the StereoLab-ish
soundscape, the repeating chorus part brings you to Shangri-La.

Here's my first impression:
Margo Guryan x StereoLab x Anemone (another emerging Canadian female singer)

Forth Wanderers - Not For Me

The standout song from their new self-titled LP

Worth to watch: Car Seat Headrest - Bodys (Jimmy Fallon)

GVVC is back!

Hi there,
As you may have noticed, Gay Vegan Vinyl Cassette has been inactive for years.
Today, I relaunched it as "Gay Vegan Vinyl Cassette reprise" with the monochrome themed skin.
Now this blog is taking not only my fellow musicians' work but also personal favorite new music(only brand new ones, premiered very recently).
